Stepping into a sauna is one of the simplest pleasures in life. Once you have the basics covered, and take a nice position, there’s really nothing more you need to do. Sauna is meant to be a relaxing, unhurried experience where you can let your mind drift, enjoy the quiet heat, or chat peacefully with friends. It’s a space where time slows down and the world outside fades away.
You’ll probably stay inside for about 5–15 minutes before taking a break to cool off and do another round or two. Because of that short time inside, you won’t need a phone, book, or anything else to pass the time. In fact, here in Finland, you never see anyone bringing a device or reading material into a sauna. Not only would it disrupt the simple beauty of the moment, but your devices might be also damaged by the humidity of vaporizing water.
Things to do in The Sauna
You don’t have to just sit still in the sauna—there are a few simple things you can do. If you like, start with gentle stretching. The heat warms your muscles, making it easier to loosen tight areas. Keep it slow and easy: shoulder rolls, light twists, or simple leg stretches.
The sauna is a great place to take a moment for yourself. Try closing your eyes and focusing on your breathing, or let your mind wander without any pressure. The quiet, warm space is ideal for small reflections, calming thoughts, or even a quick meditation session. Think of it as a time to reset.
Saunas can also be a social experience. If you’re with friends, feel free to chat and enjoy the moment together. Conversations in the sauna tend to be relaxed and unhurried. With no phones or distractions, it’s easy to connect in a simple, genuine way.
Whatever approach you take, keep a few practical things in mind:
- Drink water between rounds to stay hydrated.
- Take breaks when you feel too warm—step out, cool down, and return when ready.
- Keep it easy. The sauna isn’t meant to be a challenge; it’s meant to help you unwind.
